FASEB’s Breakthroughs in Bioscience Series

Objectives

1) To convey the value of basic science to audiences unfamiliar with the scientific
research and development process.

2) To emphasize the value of investing in basic science because it often leads
(evidenced by the articles) to breakthroughs.

3) To underscore that good basic research often yields practical benefits even though the results of research can be unpredictable.

4) To demonstrate that targeted research is usually based on basic research findings.

5) To describe scientific breakthroughs that have a demonstrated societal impact.

6) To write at a level that is suitable for the educated layperson.

7) To sustain the interest of the reader by keeping the article entertaining.

8) To provide the lay public with educational articles that can augment curricula now used in primary and secondary schools.

9) To explain the role of NIH, NSF, or other Federal agencies in supporting the research described in the articles.

And if possible:

10) To explain that animal models are valuable tools in biomedical research.

11) To inform readers that human tissues and archival tissue are vital elements of
biomedical research.
