Rigorous scientific testing of the safety of most dietary supplements in pregnancy has not been done. There is a serious problem with lack of reliable knowledge about these substances, but there is also a problem with too much unreliable information being available. Many magazine articles, books, and web sites provide advice about the use of dietary supplements in pregnancy, and without a requirement for FDA regulation, the consumer cannot know which of these recommendations and claims to believe.
